In 2017, the American Dental Association asked dentists to start screening patients for obstructive sleep apnea. At that time, sleep apnea was not really on my radar. As I started to educate myself on what sleep apnea is, and more importantly, how incredibly common it is, I became very passionate about both screening patients and offering an alternative treatment for those who have been diagnosed with the disease.
Patients with sleep apnea come in all shapes and sizes, ages and backgrounds. Interestingly, thin females tend to be the group that is most likely to not get a diagnosis when they are suffering with the disease. We see a common cluster of symptoms in thin, young to middle aged women. They can include anxiety, teeth clenching, acid reflux, general exhaustion and poor sleep. Oftentimes they have chronic pain of some kind or fibromyalgia.
